I was 5 yesrd sober before my cat, who I had for 22 years, had to cross the rainbow bridge in my arms after having a stroke. I remember how hard it was and how everyone told me to pull it together, that she was just a cat- But she was my reason to live after so many tries to unalienable myself. I relapsed- Hard. I drank a handle a night for just over a year and started experimenting with harder substances which lead me into a spiral. It took me getting sick with mono to realize that my other pets still needed me, and I make them a promise every day that I'm going to love them and we're going to make it- Thank you for not making this a punchline, and thank you to the staff at hospitals for showing compassion in these situations. It's hard being on the road to recovery, especially when you're alone. ❤❤

Yeah that's rough. Ive been a caregiver for many many years and my last caregiving position at an actual facility, was assisted living/memory care aka Alzheimer's & dementia. Residents were sometimes SO difficult and there was ZERO support for staff to help us cool down, regain our composure, catch our breath, blow off steam, or cry if we needed to. This is a right to work state, and the owner of the facility didnt allow us breaks or lunch of any kind. Residents punched us in the face, bit us, kicked us, spit on us, pulled our hair out, smeared their shyt everywhere, called us all the names and we couldn't do anything about it. We were paid 1 or 2$ above minimum wage but it still wasnt enough. Typical BS pizza parties a couple times a year and a $10 gift card at xmas was how the owner showed us he appreciated us 🙄. A caregiver should never hit a resident. You shouldn't be hitting your elders, caregiver or not. But I do understand how frustrating it can be for a caregiver caring for dementia patients. Caregivers need care too, de-escalation training, protection from abuse and they need their employers to provide them a way to be relieved of an abusive resident or a resident that is having a difficult episode. They are two different things. Some residents are abusive, have a history of it and it's listed in their behaviors. Some residents suffer hallucinations and get frightened and get physical out of fear and confusion. Sometimes residents dont recognize you or are having a combative episode caused by medication or mood problems. Some residents are in pain and cold and dont want to be touched, moved or exposed to the cold air even though they're soaked and really need to be cleaned up. So many things can cauee a situation to blow up and most caregivers I know, including myself have really good self control and are understanding and patient with our fellow human beings/elders. But there are definitely residents that would push Mother Theresa to the edge and are just downright abusive and they enjoy it. Misery loves company. Ive known residents that were resentful they were still alive and their spouse wasn't. Resentful they were stuck in that facility. Racist, physically and verbally abusive and would tell us caregivers that she treated us badly because she was mad she was still there without her husband and mad she couldn't so the things she used to do to take care of herself. Anyway. Being a caregiver for dementia sufferers is not for the faint of heart.
